Heritage Cricketers of Bangladesh are the Cup winners
at the 2019 Phuket International Cricket Sixes

Finals Day Wrap

Heritage Cricketers of Dhaka are the 2019 Cup winners of the 16th ACST Phuket International Cricket Sixes on a wonderful day’s play at the Alan Cooke Ground to round off another fine event.

Heritage scored 89-3 in the showpiece against Warriors of Qatar thanks to quality batting from Jatinder Singh and Taufiqul Nayan after a shaky start to the innings. In reply Warriors fell 28 runs short on 61-0 despite a sterling effort from leading light Imal Liyanage.

The champions had reached the final after edging out House of Cricket by 5 runs in a thrilling semi-final. The defeated South Africans from Northern Cape fell just short as Ruan Maritz reached 34 not out to round off their fine debut ACST appearance.

In the other Cup semi-final Warriors proved too strong for Yarraleen Lions, defeating the Melbourne outfit by 6 wickets as Liyanage and Assad Bora showed exhilarating skills with the willow.

Wins for Yarraleen Lions over House of Cricket and Heritage Cricketers against Penguin Penguins on Sunday morning had earlier secured both sides semi-final berths as Sri Lankan Test star Russel Arnold starred for the Lions once again.

Leederville CC were crowned as the second tier Bowl champions following victory over the locals of Patong Penguins after the teams finished 5th and 6th in the final standings. Eoghan McElwee and Michael Evans knocked off the 66 required for the Perth side in the final without the loss of a wicket, after Jason Robertson starred for the Penguins in their innings.

The Plate was won by Southern Stars who overcame Bounty Buccanneers by 70 runs after posting a huge total of 97-1 from their 5 overs, as Amiruddin took the plaudits with the bat for the victors with a retirement on 32.

In the Plate group games earlier in proceedings, Eagles CC defeat CBB Postels but then lost to Southern Stars, meaning the Victorian side overcame the Samoan team to reach the final, where they faced the Buccs of Malaysia who had also seen off the Chiang Mai based CBB outfit.

ACST Chairman, Michael ‘Cat’ Maher reflected contently at the completion of play. “This has been another memorable edition of the Phuket International Cricket Sixes with the emphasis very much on international, as teams old and new have contributed from many nations.”

“There has been some magnificent cricket and wonderful friendships cemented. Heritage Cricketers have proven to be fitting Cup winners, but my congratulations go out to all teams, regardless of winning trophies. They have all been a credit to themselves, the tournament and the ACST.”

“I would like to thank the Phuket Cricket Group and the committee of the Alan Cooke Ground for their invaluable assistance with the event along with our valued sponsors and dedicated volunteers and officials who have worked tirelessly to make the event such a success. Here’s to 2020!”

Friday 12th April

The Competition for Cup Places Hots Up at the ACG

Day Three Wrap

Warriors from Qatar had a happy Friday going into the Songkran break at the Alan Cooke Ground in Phuket as they led the standings on 30 points after completing a perect record of six wins out of six in the Phuket International Sixes 2019 as they have qualified for a place in Cup Semi-Finals which will be played on Sunday.

The Warriors played two matches on Friday as they beat Yaraleen Lions from Australia by 11 runs and following an hour’s rain delay also defeated House of Cricket from South Africa by six wickets. Warriors have a formibale top three as Assad, Imal and Hadi all made runs over the course of two matches

Each of the top six sides after Round One play a further two matches in the second stage, with their points tallies carried forward to formulate the groupings for honours on Sunday.

Other sides currently occupying the C.up places after Day 3 were the boys from Bangladesh Heritage Cricketer made it five wins out of five to stand in second place in the table after beating Leederville from Australia by four wickets. Although they both lost on Friday, Yaraleen and Leederville are still in the top four.

Leederville lost both matches on Friday as they had earlier been beaten by local favourites Patong and House of Cricket will overtake them if they beat Yaraleen on Sunday morning. Patong have to face Heritage so they are still most likely to compete for the Bowl rather than reach the Cup semi-finals.

The Plate group; competed for by the sides finishing in places 7 to 10 after the first round, saw its opening salvos. Friday’s matches saw wins for Eagles and Southern Stars who both gained their first victories of the tournament but Bounty Buccaneers won the final Sixes match of the day to leave all four teams including CBBs in contention for the Plate final.

Following the completion of seven matches in the Sixes, a 15-over matches was played between the All Stars and the Rest of the World as the 22 players who were put forward to play were selected for the two sides by drawing names out of a hat. The random selection process worked perfectly as team mates played against team mates with a large selection from House of Cricket being roared on by their enthusiastic supporters. Both teams collapsed early against hostile bowling but All Stars recoverd to 103 for 8 thanks to 35 from Assad Bora but it was Rest of the World who won by two wickets after Faisal Ahmed hit 31 before his retirement before last man Amiruddin hit two sixes to win an exciting match.

Tomorrow sees a rest day from the main competition as participants enjoy the Songkran celebrations along with some Beach Cricket at Bangtao.

Finals Day on Sunday will see the honours decided from 9:45 at the Alan Cooke Ground. After the conclusion of the group matches there will be semi-finals and a final in the Cup and finals for the Bowl and the Plate. Admission is free for spectators, all are welcome and refreshments are available.

Thursday 11th April

Heritage Cricketers clip the wings of Eagles and House of Cricket
to top the standings after Day Two at the ACG

Day Two Wrap

Dhaka side Heritage Cricketers took over at the top of the standings after Day Two in Phuket following wins against Eagles CC of Samoa and then previous front runners House of Cricket of South Africa with some fine team play, aided by a fine retired knock by Mahabub Niloy and a 2-6 over from Jatinder Singh.

The only other unbeaten side at the end of Round One are Warriors of Qatar as they lowered the colours of Malaysia’s Bounty Buccaneers, Chiang Mai’s CBB Postels as well as Southern Stars of Victoria with Imal Liyanage, Assad Bora and Shakir Hussain showing scintillating form with the bat. Mohammad Hadi took three wickets in his over against the Buccs.

The Phuket International Cricket Sixes has been competed for since 2004 and forms part of the Phuket Cricket Week organised by the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST). Each side plays four games in round one, with the top eight sides then jostling for Cup and Bowl positions in a further round two game; while the other teams contest the Plate competition.

Pressing for a top four slot are Melbourne’s Yarraleen Lions who smashed 102 against the Buccaneers as former Sri Lankan Test and limited overs star Russel Arnold and Imesh Udayanga made hay in the sun before the two same batsmen put Perth’s Leederville CC under the pump with further retirements in their innings.

Leederville’s defeat was their only deficit in the opening stages as they took the spoils against Southern Stars earlier in the proceedings to stay in contention. House of Cricket skipper Michael Payne made a retirement in his outfit’s victory against the locals of Patong Penguins to also press for a later opportunity to look for Cup honours.

In the day’s other couple of games, Bounty Buccaneers saw off the challenge of Eagles with Dave Nightingale rolling back the years with the willow in a fine socially contested affair before Patong proved too strong for the Postels in the final match of the day.

Play will continue on tomorrow (Friday) at 9:45 at the Alan Cooke Ground after as participants headed to sponsor bar, the Aussie Pub in Kamala for a barbeque and get together after play. Admission is free for spectators, all are welcome, and refreshments are available.

House of Cricket Lead the Way in Phuket

South African side, House of Cricket lead the standings after Day One of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST) 2019 Phuket International Cricket Sixes, as the tournament got under way in glorious weather at the Alan Cooke Ground in Phuket.

The side debuting in the tournament from Hartswater in Northern Cape hammered the Samoan outfit Eagles CC in the final match of the day with Ruan Maritz showing the way with the bat after his team had taken down Victorian team Southern Stars earlier in the day.

Other leading contenders after Day One completing a couple of wins were Leederville CC of Perth WA, who defeated the locals of Patong Penguins and then the Samoan representatives Eagles CC.
